Hundreds of fans met in the Brixton Oval for a Bowie Tribute Street Party, setting off fireworks, projecting his videos onto the facing buildings, and all singing songs like Starman and Oh You Pretty Things
I had my best Sled this year in Calgary. I loved going there alone and bopping around to see every band I wanted to see and running into Calgary friends and Vancouver people and even spending half an hour just sitting alone with a beer and my phone or hiding out at one of the comedy shows or going up the Calgary tower before heading out to the next venue. It was the perfect mix of being alone and being around others and I don’t remember ever being so relaxed and having such a good time at a festival like this.
My venture to the South by Southwest Music Festival began on a high note March 15th at 2:00 pm at the Vancouver bus station where a security guard made the international sign for toking up and asked me if I “had any weed”. He informed me that my trip to Seattle would be crossing a border and that “they aren’t like us over there”. No shit. When I think of the U.S. I think cheap beer, guns, and no healthcare, which my delusional paranoid-stoner mind translates to “somebody’s gonna get drunk and shoot me… where’s my travel insurance?” I think he was just trying to score.
